Monday, February 05, 2007 Arctic Freeze Few things react well to temperatures that drop to -27 degrees (yes, with wind chill it actually got that cold today), and buses are no exception. This afternoon I was taking the bus to my favorite cafe in the world, the Bourgeois Pig, when the bus stopped to let new passengers on. Now, normally this is an unremarkable procedure repeated countless times every day. But today there was a woman waiting in a wheelchair, and when the driver put out the ramp, it froze halfway. And refused to go back in. Or finish going out. After 20 minutes of stomping on various ramp pieces trying to dislodge whatever had gotten stuck (the man accompanying the wheelchair-bound woman) and continuous pressing of the ramp buttons (the driver), the bus was cold. Fortunately, at that point the next bus was on its way and all the passengers from our bus piled on. Apparently our mishap was not the only one of the day: the couple reported that they'd been stuck three times already due to ramps freezing. It could have been an episode of Seinfeld.
