Sunday, June 25, 2006 A small audience can still be awesome. Last night I had an audience that maxed out at two (four if you count the owners). It's a rare occurance, but nonetheless it does happen to every musician. Fortunately, the concert ended up being a memorable, fun one in spite of the low turnout. My friend Diana was initially the only person besides the owner at Pick-a-Cup Coffee, so since she's also a musician (and I'd never heard her original material), we traded songs. At some point, a man named Borislav, or Bobby, walked in--and left and came back with a bunch of flowers. Diana stayed long enough to produce the epiphany that one of my songs is in 7/8, which I hadn't realized, but she had to leave early; Bobby handled her a rose as she was walking out the door and said that she had a beautiful voice. He gave me one as well. Toward the end of my set, another man walked into the coffee shop and ended up buying me coffee when I was done; Bobby left and a few minutes later returned and handed me the rest of the flowers. So even though I didn't make any money and played for barely anyone, I did walk out of the night with a dozen pink roses. They happen to be my favorite flower. ^ Top | 10:57 PM | | | Thursday, June 22, 2006 The Return of the Blog Wow, in four years I don't think I've ever gone this long without posting. Anyway, the blog is back. I'm sitting in MoJoe's Coffee right now, borrowing a kind audience member's laptop; tonight the cafe is hosting a benefit for Chicago Books to Women in Prison, a very cool organization that donates books to prisoners and tries to meet requests for specific literature as often as possible. I opened the night for a great crowd. And I have to say, the cafe is a fantastic discovery as well. Summer is undoubtedly the best time to be in Chicago. The last couple of weeks have started the season of free outdoor events, like the Chicago Blues Festival (the largest of its kind in the country), Summerdance (live music and lessons beforehand in various dance styles), and the Grant Park Music Festival (classical concerts). I've settled into my apartment, and it now feels like home since all of my books are there. We still need a dining table and some furnishings, but it's definitely starting to feel comfortable. ^ Top | 8:12 PM | | |
