A New Record

I think it's a record: I'm scheduled to play 11 concerts in one month, that month being August. The former record was also held by August, but last year--I toured the Midwest then and played nine shows. But this time I won't be on the road alone: I'll be traveling with Waypastfrown, a singer-songwriter from San Francisco. Check out the Gigs page for a concert listing that includes Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin. Here's hoping that all of our equipment fits in the car that Thomas (Waypastfrown) is driving--it's hard enough getting everything into my car without having another person there.

Cars Continued

The car drama continues. The day after I got a flat tire in the rain and Pep Boys proved its incompetence, I went to my car in the morning only to discover that someone had broken in. This person ripped apart the dashboard in order to get at the CD player—which, frustrations aside, is somewhat amusing in an objective sense, because it’s not that great of a CD player to begin with (it’s a 1993 Toyota Corolla, what do you expect?). He also stole a case full of my favorite CDs—again, somewhat amusing because if he actually looks inside he’ll only recognize perhaps half of the artists, seeing that they’re primarily indies—which I’m surprised he even saw since it was buried under a newspaper. So my CD collection is down by a third and I can’t listen to music in the car—and I need to spend some time trying to fix the dashboard, which is in sorry shape.

Of Inefficiency and Rain

Early this morning, Chicago was under the spell of a thunderstorm—and since I usually leave the windows on my car cracked open a couple of inches to keep the car from becoming a miniature greenhouse, this was a problem. You wouldn’t think an inch or two of air would be enough to let much rain in, but the entire car was thoroughly soaked. The closest thing I had to a towel in the car (because of course I didn’t discover that the seats were wet until I was already in the car) was a green tablecloth (why a tablecloth? Because I broke down one of our events for work the other day, and everything from our booth was still in it). So I draped the tablecloth over the driver’s seat and went to work.

But there was a second problem. As I was driving on the freeway, I suddenly got a flat tire. I contemplated calling roadside assistance since I didn’t want to get wet (it was still pouring), but decided that I wasn’t that much of a wuss and started changing my tire. After 10-15 minutes, a limo stopped behind me and its driver got out and asked if I’d like any help, which I gratefully accepted. So my job became holding the largest umbrella known to man. It’s a good thing the limo driver offered to help, because in the end I wouldn’t have been able to get the tire off myself. Once all the nuts were off the wheel (after one of the bolts broke—rust), he had to hammer at the wheel for a good 20 minutes before it decided it wanted to leave its home (more rust). Apparently it’s been a while since the tires have been changed. Happily, that bit of the morning ended well, though I was rather late getting to the office.

After work I took the car to Pep Boys to get them to replace the bolt that broke and fix the flat (driving with three nuts holding the wheel in place instead of four for any length of time didn’t seem like the greatest idea), which they said would take an hour (this was at 4pm). I left. At 8pm I realized that the repair shop still hadn’t called me to say that the car was ready, so I called them and found out that they still weren’t done—but that they would be finished by close at 9pm. Half an hour later I still hadn’t heard back, so I just got a friend to drive me to the shop, hoping that they’d have completed the repair by the time I got there. After some confusion, I paid my bill and left just after close.

About an hour later, I was going to put some stuff in the trunk when I realized that although they’d fixed the original tire and put it on the car, they hadn’t returned the spare to the trunk. I’m assuming it’s still at the shop, which I need to call tomorrow. Sigh.

A Little Summer Music

Concerts Seen (Both Accidentally and Purposefully) so Far This Summer:
  • Odessa Harris (Goodnite Gracie’s, Ann Arbor)
  • Matthew Skoller Band (Nick’s Uptown)
  • Bobby Blue Bland, Bettye La Vette, Vick Allen, PG Man with Lady Audrey, Omar Cunningham, Dorothy Moore (Chicago Blues Festival)
  • Delirious (Willow Creek)
  • Ralph Irizarry and SonCafé (Summerdance)
  • Ain’t Lyin’, Rich Maisel and Terre Cohen Orchestra, Prohibition Orchestra, Chicago Mountain String Band (Custer's Last Stand, Evanston)
  • Tish Trio (The Smoke Daddy)
  • Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble (Millennium Park)
  • Seu Jorge, Amadou and Mariam (Millennium Park)
  • The Fold, Tinsley Ellis, Elvin Bishop, Hip Noz, Foghat, West Side Wonders (Naperville Ribfest)
  • Mark O’Connor (Millennium Park)
  • Goran Bregovic (Millennium Park)
  • Ravenswood Community Orchestra, Entertainment Project (Benfest)
The music at Custer's Last Stand, a street festival in Evanston, and Benfest, a street festival in Roscoe Village, both left much to be desired. It's a tough call, but the worst music of the summer thus far was provided by the Ravenswood Community Orchestra, which needed to learn how to tune its instruments. It's bad when almost all of the higher instruments are out of tune for the entirety of a set, and it's pathetic when the piccolo is the most in tune of them all. (How do you keep two piccolos in tune? Shoot them both.)

It's harder to pick the best concert of the summer thus far--most of the music I've heard has been wonderful. The music at Millennium Park has been especially good--it's incredible to hear people like Yo-Yo Ma for free. I love Chicago.
